Traumatic   Brain and Spinal Injury

Taylor is a 25 year old man who has sustained an incomplete C6 spinal injury and a
moderate traumatic brain injury  (TBI)  as a result of a  high speed motor vehicle accident. His
best friend  ” Ed”  was killed in the accident.

While in Rehab Taylor is demonstrating difficulties with cognition (thinking, memory, and
reasoning), sensory processing (taste, and smell),  communication   he has been diagnosed as
having aphasia  (expression and understanding), and behavio ur  concerns (depression,
anxiety, aggression ) related to his TBI.
Due to Taylor’s C6 spinal injury he will require education on Autonomic Dysreflexia regarding
the onset of  AD and treatment and preventative measures for AD
Taylor has a stage two pressure ulcer developing, and his range of movement (ROM) is
limited in lower limbs due to spinal injury and requires assistance with dressing lower body
and transfers into a wheelc hair / chair . He also requires assistance with bowel and bladder
management.
He is independent with meals and feeding himself

Social –   Newly married to Lisa for 6 months, they have one child (Joseph aged 2 years)
Vocational-   Carpenter fulltime (Owner of own business  for 4 years )
Health –   Prior he was extremely fit enjoying what life presented him and no previous
conditions
Financial –   Lisa is a stay at home mother. Taylor provided the sole income for the family
Spiritual-   Catholic the family attends church on special feast days together
Leisure Activities-  Taylor enjoys riding off road motorbike riding with mates, and plays golf
once a month with mates.

“ Proper rehabilitation is very important once a patient has emerged from coma and post-traumatic amnesia, and has a significant effect on the final outcome. It should be noted that
discharge from rehabilitation does not mean that recovery has finished. The individual with a
brain injury has hopefully learned the tools to con tinue with their own recovery ” .
