Prompt
Using your research and knowledge of your research novel and secondary sources, create an original thesis that analyzes your novel through a critical perspective

(Marxist, Psychoanalytic, or Feminist). Your original thesis will need to be approved by me before writing the paper.
Primary Source Quotations
1. Primary source quotations are any part of the novel you have read that you want to include in your paper. Anything from your novel (it doesn’t have to be

dialogue) can be used as primary source evidence.
2. The purpose of primary source evidence is to do two things. 1) Show that you have read and understand your novel. 2) Work as evidence when you make a claim or

defend an opinion.
3. Like all your evidence, your primary source evidence must be copied down exactly as it appears in the original source. Be especially careful with characters’

names (Crime and Punishment people will need to be extra careful). Don’t forget to include the page number.
4. You will need to include a minimum of 7 Primary Source Quotations in your paper. At the end of each quotation, write down a word or two to explain main idea of

quotation.
Practice:
Using Frankenstein as an example, let’s say you are writing a psychoanalytic perspective paper and making a point that Frankenstein has become completely obsessed

with his work. Which of the following quotations would best support your claim? How would you analyze the quotation to prove your point?

1. “From this day natural philosophy, and particularly chemistry, in the most comprehensive sense of the term became nearly my sole occupation” (46). Work

obsession.
2. “The summer months passed while I was thus engaged, heart and soul, in one pursuit. […] but my eyes were insensible to the charms of nature. And the same

feelings which caused me also to forget those friends who were so many miles absent, and whom I had not seen for so long a time” (52-3). Work obsession.
3. “But my enthusiasm was checked by my anxiety, and I appeared like one doomed by slavery to toil in the mines, or any other unwholesome trade, than an artist

occupied by his favourite employment. Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever, and I became nervous to a most painful degree” (54). Work obsession.
***While each of these pieces of evidence would work to prove your point, which quotation best shows Frankenstein’s obsession with his work? Also to consider when

choosing your evidence, which quotation will I best be able to explain and analyze?
Good luck finding your evidence. See me about questions or concerns.
