Foundations of Social Theory

Foundations of Social Theory
Choose one of the following passages and critically analyze it in the light of your readings from Marx. How and why does Marx make this argument? What is its significance for Marx’s understanding of modern capitalism?

Your essay should be no more than six double-spaced typed pages. As in previous essays, organize your essay clearly, try to stay close to the texts, and cite passages where appropriate. Also keep in mind the criteria spelled out in the “Grading Practices”. We will adhere to these and you should use them in organizing your paper. As you do so see what questions occur to you as you work through the text. Try to incorporate them into your paper. We want to try to move from what to how and why. Remember that being original does not mean saying something that no one has ever said before. It means working at the edge of your own thinking and pushing yourself to deepen and extend your understanding.

“The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionizing the instruments of production, and thereby the relations of production, and with them the whole relations of society. Conservation of old modes of production in unaltered form was, on the contrary, the first condition of existence for all earlier industrial classes. Constant revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones.” [Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto in Robert Tucker, The Marx-Engels Reader, p. 476]
