FORMAL ANAYLSIS

Write a 750 word paper examining one work of art from a famous artist of the Modern Era. Any artist from the Modern Art Slides shown thus far from the beginning of the course (Realism – Post impressionism images found on Blackboard) will be accepted. Fully identify the work in terms of artist, date, medium, measurement, and title. Ponder why you think this particular work has captured your attention. The paper should begin with a brief explanation of why you selected this particular work from the other paintings of the period.

Next write a detailed visual analysis of the work. Your visual analysis should examine the format, dimension, materials and techniques of the work. You should also describe the elements of design: line, color, shape, form, texture, and pattern. Explain how these materials, elements and techniques come together according to compositional principles: spatial relationships, scale and proportion, unity, variety, balance, rhythm, and emphasis.

Then discuss the content of work, its subject matter. Consider the imagery and if shown, the text or calligraphy. What did the painter depict? Is this a well-established and predictable subject (ie. landscape, portraiture, still life or historical scene) or a new subject for painting? What may have determined the choice of subject matter?

Now place the work within its historical framework within the development of art. Determine what movements, artists, ideas, etc., may have influenced the work – directly or indirectly.

Finally critique the art. In your view, is it significant? If so, how? Does it have aesthetic worth? Does it move you? Does it encourage you to think? Is it highly creative? Will it have lasting impact? Does the work carry an important conceptual, social, political, spiritual, moral, ethical value or educational message or intent? How does it inspire you?
