This Fiction Essay is to be done on the short story Shiloh by Bobby Ann Mason. It should be double-spaced and 14 font. Instructions are attached.
FICTION ESSAY
OPTION 1:
“Shiloh”
1. Write a 3-4 page essay in which you trace the evolution of Norma Jean’s struggle with identity and examine how both Mabel and Leroy contribute to that struggle.
2. Part of your discussion should focus on the symbolic significance of the log cabin and Shiloh.
3. Use textual evidence and at least two elements of fiction (antagonist, protagonist, conflict, irony, symbolism, setting, theme) two support your ideas.
4. If you use research to help develop and support your ideas you must document your sources.
5. When using direct quotes from the stories, set them off with quotation marks and put the page number surrounded with parentheses after the quote.
OPTION 2:
“Sonny’s Blues”
1. Throughout Sonny’s Blues, Baldwin uses many references to darkness and light. Sometimes he uses these references to darkness and light in a contradictory manner. These references to darkness and light in order to express a central idea related to the story.
2. In a 3-4 page essay develop a statement of theme (what the author is saying about relationships) and use examples of the author’s use of light and dark and some of the contradictory statements about light and dark to support your statement of theme. Explain how use of light/dark contribute to the overall development of the story and its central theme.
3. You should also include in your essay a discussion of how the conflict, antagonist and protagonist are related.
4. You can include any other relevant elements of fiction that you feel will help you with advancing your ideas and that will support your statement of theme.
