Essay Two – Division

ClassificationYour assignment is to choose one of the three prompts listed below in order to write a Division/Classification essay. Your

essay should be no less than 750 words (very close to three, full double-spaced, typed pages), and should have a solid thesis statement that

is well-supported by topic sentences and concrete details and examples. Your essay should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font and

adhere to MLA format guidelines (see: A Writer’s Resource – pgs. 331-341 for correct formatting and for how an essay should look in MLA

format). You may use personal experiences to serve as examples, but do so by using third person and avoiding the use of first and second

person pronouns. You may not use any forms of “I” or “You.”

Remember, a Division/Classification essay must serve a purpose; therefore, your essay must have a thesis (all parts, or types, must come

together to argue something about how each type you choose to write about functions as a whole). Having said this, also remember that each

type you choose to write about for a Division/Classification essay must be mutually exclusive (your categories can share some basic

characteristics, but should not overlap) and parallel.

Lastly, you will also need to incorporate at least three direct quotes into the body paragraphs of your essay (from the “What is a Species”

essay written by Stephen Jay Gould). Gould’s essay can be found under the Division/Classification section of your e-reader:
