“Equality for All: Our Founding Philosophies”

Essay Question: Howard Zinn writes in Chapter 4 “Tyranny is Tyranny” that “we have here a forecast of the long history of American politics, the mobilization of lower class energy by upper class politicians for their own purposes”. He also writes in Chapter 5 “A Kind of Revolution” that the “Constitution is the work of certain groups trying to maintain privileges, while giving just enough rights and liberties to enough of the people to ensure their popular support”. Explain what Zinn means by these assertions using specific details from the ALL the class material (especially the Declaration of Independence, role of the Revolution and the Constitution) in your essay. Finally, include the significance and contradictions of Thomas Jefferson’s writings on politics, race, and civil liberties in your analysis of the founding ideas of the United States of America (be sure to include Jefferson’s philosophies/analysis of race and “racialization” of African Americans and Native Americans). Once again, be sure to use supporting evidence from the class readings, handouts, videos, class lecture. This means referencing authors or material, and using short quotes.
Format:
•The review must be typed and be at least 2 ½ full pages. You must not exceed 3 pages.
•It should be double-spaced and in standard font (No fonts larger than 12)
•At least 1 inch margin on all sides of the paper.
•It should be proofread and use standard and formal English.
•Short essay format, with an introduction, body and conclusion. You also need a thesis statement.
•Be sure to use short quotes as supporting evidence and reference your authors/materials.
•NO TITLE PAGE IS NEEDED. You are to write your name on the top of the paper, nothing else.
