Project description
An aqueous effluent stream is discharged from a process with a volumetric flow rate, ????. Periodically, the effluent is contaminated by an unstable toxic waste, known to decompose at a rate proportional to its concentration (where ???? is the decomposition rate constant). The effluent must be diverted to a holding tank, of volume ????, prior to final discharge.

Required
Fig. 1. Effluent Stream Treatment Tank.
1. Derive expressions for the overall and component material balance. Explicitly state all the assumptions you make.
2. Determine the steady state operating conditions of the process when the inlet concentration of the effluent is that indicated by your individual data (Table 1.)
3. Develop a Simulink model of the proposed system. Clearly lay out the model and make sure all blocks and connections are appropriately labelled.
4. Produce a graph to show the response of the process to a sudden increase in inlet effluent concentration from 0 to ????????0.
5. A chemical additive can be dosed to the tank which increases the decomposition rate constant to 0.25 min-1. From the initial differential equation developed in part 1, determine the tank volume required to reduce the outlet concentration to below 0.02 mol/m3.
6. By investigating the performance of the process in reducing the effluent concentration, determine which design factors influence the key dynamic response parameters.
