Emergence of Nationalism

Describe how Mexican Muralists express Vasconcelos’ ideas from his Cosmic Race in their art. Through completing this assignment, you will be able to establish a relationship between Jose Vasconcelos’s ideas as presented in his essay: The Cosmic Race or La raza cósmica with the ideas found depicted in murals of the Three Great Ones: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Please note that the attached text is bilingual.

Instructions:

1. Download and read the attached document which contains parts of the prologue written for the second edition of The Cosmic Race (La raza cósmica) (1948) and the first chapter, from its fourth edition.

2. Choose any mural from the Tres Grandes.

3. Now, you will write an essay explaining how can you relate Jose Vasconcelo’s ideas as expressed in The Cosmic Race with the Muralism artistic movement as portrayed in the specific mural of your choice.

4. Give specific examples and include in your document a clear image of the mural chosen for your essay.

5. Give the title of the mural, the place where it can be found, and the year when it was painted. I will use the image of the mural to evaluate your essay. If you don’t include it, your essay will not be evaluated, and you will receive a failing grade. When writing your essay, you MUST use your own words and NOT plagiarize or quote from any source.
