Education for the Unemployed
I. Proposal Summary
The Education for the Unemployed!program is focused on educating a growing population that may cause the future children of Louisiana to be at an even more disadvantage and that is unemployed mothers. These women who are choosing to be unemployed for a variety of reasons are reported to be less educated and fall into the lower end of the socio-economic status. The amount of $100, 000 is being requested in order to facilitate an educational experience for these mothers and allow them to be active participants in their children’s education.

IV. Project Description
The Education for the Unemployed! program will help bridge the achievement gap between children who attend early preschool programs and those who do not through providing educational experiences to unemployed and stay at home parents. The program will last approximately 12 months for each child and will provide school ready skills in the areas of math, literacy and science. Families will be introduced to 4 basic components: child development, Early Learning Standard, simple daily tasks that can help their children to succeed and communication skills. In order to facilitate even further success, each component will be broken down by age.
Once a family enters into the program, they will attend an initial meeting with the agency which will address child development. Families will be encouraged to bring their children with them to the agency’s supervised play area while they are attending the initial meeting so that their children can socialize. The meeting will last approximately one hour and will be designed according to the age of the child within the family.
After the initial meeting, parents will be given a packet of age appropriate curriculum materials and asked to sign a waiver acknowledging that there will be a person visiting their home three times a week for the next 12 months. However, as the parent start to grasp the concepts, home visits may be reduced to two times a week or even one time a week. During those meetings, the home visitor will explain how to use all the materials as well as educate the parents on the other three components of the program. The following includes break downs of the four components of the program.
We still need to have a paragraph about how we will measure their progress. Things that you can research are.. The Picard Center Dolly Parton Project (they measure literacy), you can see if HIPPY has anything about how they measure the children’s progress, then we need a way to measure the science knowledge.
Child Development
3 Year Olds
[Information about what will be taught in the class will go here. It has to be specific to 3 year olds. For example, what to expect from a 3 year old, things that have to be taught to them because they are not instilled, where they are in their development]
4 Year Olds
[Information about what will be taught in the class will go here. It has to be specific to 4 year olds. Explain the changes from a 3 to four year old. What concepts should a four year old be able to grasp? What are some things that the child may have trouble understanding? Where are they developmentally?}
5 Year Olds
[Information about what will be taught in the class will go here. It has to be specific to 5 year olds. Do the same here as you did above]

Write about skills we can teach the parents for a 5 year old to help out with math, literacy and science.
Communication Skills
3 Year Olds
Discuss ways we can teach a mother to communicate to their 3 year old to help the child understand what is being asked, expected of them, etc.
4 Year Olds
Discuss ways we can teach a mother to communicate to their 4 year old to help the child understand what is being asked, expected of them, etc.
5 Year Olds
We can break this up into two sections. 1) We will need to discuss ways we can teach a mother to communicate to their 5 year old to help the child understand what is being asked, expected of them, etc. 2) We can teach the parent communication skills so that they can use these skills with their child’s school. A lot of parents do not get involved with their child’s school because they feel intimidated. We can teach them ways to approach the teacher, things they can share with the teacher to help the teacher understand their child better, etc.
