• According to Hakuta and colleagues, it takes immigrant children 3-5 years to develop speaking proficiency in English and seven years to develop reading proficiency in English. Based on this premise, should we assess English Language Learners differently? What are authentic ways to assess English Language Learners especially during the first three years of learning a language? What are authentic ways to assess ELLs’ reading proficiency in English?
