I believe that we will eventually reach a geomagnetic reversal, however, not during my lifetime. The University of Maryland has developed the largest spinning model of the Earth’s interior called the Lathrops’s sphere that will be used to predict when the Earth’s magnetic field will next reverse (Edwards, 2014). This sphere encompasses another sphere and in-between those two spheres are 12 tons of liquid sodium that is heated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This liquid sodium is supposed to mimic the roiling liquid iron that is in the Earth’s outer core that forms electrical currents that generate the magnetic field in a process called dynamo (Edwards, 2014). The scientists who have built this hope that this sphere and technology will help predict when the next world geomagnetic reversal will happen.
In an article written by Kelly Dickerson, she mentions that scientists have identified that during the previous reversals there wasn’t a lot of evidence of radiation damage or extinctions. If this were to happen, scientists believe that the communication systems would take the most damage. I think that the communications having the most problems would be very likely because a lot of them rely off of satellites and if the magnetic energy of the Earth shifts, then the communication systems would need to be adjusted.
