The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a number of questions concerning the role of education in society, expose students to seminal pieces of the educational literature and give students an introduction to contemporary education policy issues. This semester, you have been asked to think about the diverse and competing purposes of education, examine the struggles that arise when educating a diverse population and evaluate the successes and failures of policy reform efforts.
My goal for this course is for students to come away with the necessary tools to engage in meaningful dialogue around current issues facing our schools and policy reform efforts attempting to address these issues. As I designed this course, I specifically thought about the following question: What would my students need to know to have an educated, informed and insightful discussion about education policy with a politician?

Scenario
You have found yourself sitting next to President Obama/Governor Snyder at a dinner honoring the legacy of land-grant institutions in the United States. Dinner conversation turns to the state of our schools and education policy. Among other things, you hear talk of school choice, accountability, teacher preparation, merit pay, unions, education finance and equity. Everyone around the table seems to have an opinion about education reform. All of a sudden, someone across the table looks at you and says, ?Well, what do you think about all of this?? Having recently taken EAD 361, you are well positioned to contribute substantively to this discussion. You decide to capitalize on this rare opportunity and assert your recommendations regarding education policy.
This final assignment asks you to do two things 1) Describe what you would say to the politician and other dinner guests, and 2) Provide an explanation for your comments.

Part 1: Statement
For this portion of the assignment, you will describe what you would say to President Obama/Governor Snyder (Note: You may select another politician if you like). You may focus broadly or on a specific policy issue?think carefully about what you have learned this semester as you determine what you would like to emphasize.

? You should demonstrate knowledge of the politician?s education agenda because this will impact how you present your statement. Think about whether you are trying to convince the politician to
change his or her opinion or you are providing additional support for something the politician
already supports/is likely to support.
? You should write/record this statement as if you are directly addressing the politician (example:
?Mr. President, I think the U.S. Department of Education should consider…? as opposed to ?If I were talking to President Obama, I would recommend that the U.S. Department of Education consider…?
? If your statement is written, you will have a maximum of two double spaced pages to convey your thoughts (no shorter than 1.5 pages).

Part 2: Explanation
For the second part of the assignment, you will explain why you chose to include what you did in your statement. Provide a justification as to why what you emphasized is important and demonstrate your knowledge using course readings, lectures, and other resources.
? Show your ability to think critically, creatively and strategically about education policy issues.
? Your explanation should be written. You will have a maximum of five double spaced pages (no
shorter than four pages) to explain your statement.
Formatting:
Your written work should conform to the formal standards articulated by the American Psychological Association (APA). Incorrect formatting may result in a loss of points. Most importantly:
? Times New Roman, 12 point font
? One inch margins on all sides
? Page numbers
? Cover page that includes original title, course, student, professor, date
? Left alignment with default spacing between words and letters
? Double spaced lines with only one hard return between indented paragraphs
? References page that includes properly formatted references
