Development of a mathematical concept 0-5 years : Early Number sense
This is an individual assignment.
Choose one aspect of mathematical understanding and investigate its development (emphasis on cognitive domain) from babies to entry into the first year of school. Draw on research articles, texts and your own experiences to build a profile that can guide practice in early learning settings.
As well as being a demonstration of your own learning, this assignment is intended to assess your ability to contribute to the learning of other early childhood educators/workers. Therefore, the format and presentation of the assignment should be designed to engage and inform workplace colleagues. For example, a booklet, wall chart or multi-media presentation might be appropriate.
More detail:
Choose one aspect of mathematical understanding and investigate its development (emphasis on cognitive domain) from babies to entry into the first year of school. Draw on research articles, texts and your own experiences to build a profile that can guide practice in early learning settings.
Consider the assessing of development, planning for influencing the learning, and social/contextual factors, including:
indicators of conceptual development (what to look for in observations),
helpful stimuli and learning experiences (natural or activities),
associated development of language and communication,
other related developmental factors (e.g. physical)
specific resources suited to promoting the mathematical concepts,
connections to family and cultural experiences (e.g. advice to parents),
links to EYLF,
expectations on school entry (identify relevant syllabus content for Kindergarten)
Examples of aspects of mathematics to investigate:
Early number sense (I choosed)
Spatial position
Seriation (sequencing by size)
Length
Duration of time
Sequencing in time
Comparison (same and different)
Classification
Direction
Enclosure and area
Continuity
Word Count: 2000 words
The format and presentation of the assignment can be individually negotiated with the lecturer. Examples of formats include:
An essay
A report structured under section headings
A poster or chart designed for easy reference by teachers
A website
A digital slide show or movie (including text and or audio commentary of 1500-2000 words)
All formats:
May include illustrations and diagrams
Must include at least three age brackets, depending on the topic (e.g. 0-2, 2-3, 4-5)
Must be carefully referenced and include a reference list
Imporatant Notes:
1. I already choose ‘number sense’ this aspect for this essay
2. This essay must to link Early Learning Framework and other course reading. (I will sent to you)
3. Please write simple sentense for this essay.
4. Please consider there are 3 different age group children involved in this topic, so the method of education and mathematics knowledges are different for those 3 groups students.
For example, the mathematics knowledge for 2-3 age group children is about learning counting. The knowledge for 3-5 age group children is about addition and substraction
5. Please use some theory to support thisessay. For example, Piaget’s theory “children learning through play”, Vygotsky theory “scarffolding”, Erikson’s theory “Stage development”
