It’s funny, the way satire is supposed to be—biting with the element of truth.  Yet, the reality for the people of Europe wasn’t funny at all.  Make sure you watch the longer documentary that brings out more insight.  But we don’t want to simply deal with the facts about the Plague that are quite easy to learn, but see the deeper impact to Europe, especially socially and spiritually.  Remember, the plague is going on while the 100 Years War is raging (it actually brings the war to a stop), but also while the foundational glue of society, the CHristian Church, is in major turmoil.

The Pope has moved from Rome to Avignon; there is no better symbol for the decline and darkness of the period than the old “City of Light” had now been abandoned.  But, the move to southern France was more than just an escape from Rome.  You need to then investigate why this happened.

•Analyze how the Avignon Papacy (and subsequent Great Schism), combined with The Plague, contributed to the decline of influence of the Church, and thus altered European life.
