Dangers of American Dream
Arlington’s poem, “Richard Cory” is in many respects a critique of American materialism and its shallow association with success. Frost’s poem, “mending Wall” is also a critique about the shallowness and loneliness of Americans and how alienated they feel from one another. Discuss how these poems convey these messages. What images/allusions/symbols do the poets make? You may briefly relate your own experiences to the poems, but do not get away from the topic or lose your focus.
