An old seismology textbook, reporting on studies of animal behavior, stated: “Chickens fly up to trees and hogs stay quiet. Ducks go out of the water and dogs bark wildly.” What do you see here as possible impediments to using animal behavior to predict earthquakes? On the other hand, how might observation of animal behavior be useful?
