Students are required to make THIRTY (30) ‘cultural connections’ between the Past and the Present, demonstrating their analytical understanding of the political/economic/cultural and/or psychological impetus behind them. At least ten of their ‘cultural connections’ MUST be based on fashion, while others may include songs, movies, books, commercials, celebrities, etc. Both the ‘then’ and ‘now’ must have an accompanying illustration. a small picture for each, and below each two picture comparison, students are required to identify and describe both items/images, followed by a personal analysis of why they believe this ‘connection’ is being made. for example, Frida Khalo was a very influential artist and a picture is used in vanity fair clearly inspired by Frida Khalo, so we can say that because of people’s love of latin- inspired fashion and art, vanity fair chose to base a photo shoot on Frida Khalo. one picture of each scenario (then and now) needs to be attached on word side to side so its easy to compare. the pictures should be mall, as THIRTY (30) of those connection/ picture comparisons need to fit on two pages. one sentence explaining each picture is needed plus a third sentence explaining why its a cultural connection and what MESSAGE it is trying to send forth. another example is a picture of a soviet constructuvist propaganda poster circa 1920 and sacks fifth avenue who had a shopping bag in spring 2009 which was clearly influenced by this poster (do not use this example). This means 30 times a pair of two pictures comparing something cultural from the past with something which can be found today or in recent years. Please remember that we need 60 pictures (two for each connection and we need 30 connections), this needs to fit on the four pages which I selected above, and 10 of the 30 connections need to be something to do with fashion (either fashion in the past which is now clearly found in today fashion or art or something that happened in the past which is referred to in fashion today (either a photo shoot, or runway or catalogue). because there need to be 60 pictures, I do not need a reference for each picture as that would make 60 references. I selected five references and you can choose which 5 out of the 60 pictures you want to reference.
