Case Study 2: Corticosteroids
Geri Farrell has developed a rash over her arms and legs. Her primary care provider’s office is closed so she makes the decision to visit the local walk-in clinic next door to her neighborhood grocery. During the patient interview Ms. Farrell states she has been working in the yard since it has been so nice. She thinks she may have pulled some weeds that might have been poisonous. The nurse practitioner identifies the rash as that which is consistent with poison ivy. She is prescribed hydrocortisone cream to the affected areas 2-4 times per day and Prednisone PO as follows:
? Day 1: 30 mg divided s 10 mg before breakfast, 5 mg at lunch, 5 mg at dinner, 10 mg at
bedtime
? Day 2: 5 mg at breakfast, 5 mg at lunch, 5 mg at dinner, 10 mg at bedtime ? Day 3: 5 mg 4 times per day with meals and at bedtime
