College is Not Good for Every Body
Essays should be between 4.5 and 6 pages long, double-spaced in 12 pt. font.
In the upper left hand corner, type your name, date, course title and my name. Upper right hand corner should have header with your last name and pg. number (MLA format). If you are unsure of how to set up paper, go to Owl at Purdue website and find MLA section. One of the tabs leads to a sample paper format.
Please title your essay (something creative). Make sure that there is a clear thesis statement/s in the introduction. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph. All other sentences in the paragraph should develop the topic fully.Note that if your strategy in a paragraph is to first bring up one of the author’s ideas (Caroline’s Bird’s ideas about students seeming sad, for example, or that college is not a good financial investment, as another), and then analyze and respond to it, there may seem to be two topic sentences—her conclusion that students are sad, and then your response to that.
You can refer to outside sources, especially for statistics or current examples, but no more than 2 or 3 of them. Sources may be Internet based. Note: You are not required to use any outside sources in this essay, as this is not primarily a research paper. In any case, make sure you respond directly to the class essays, summarizing from them, paraphrasing and using a few choice quotes.Your paragraphs should not be loaded with quotes. You must use MLA in-text citations even if just responding to and referencing our texts. Also provide a Works Cited page (even if just using our class articles). Do your best—I do not expect perfection in MLA for this paper.
If you get stuck, just free write a rough, rough draft first to get ideas on paper.
If you have trouble writing introductions, first write a rough thesis statement/s, next, write a draft of the whole paper, and then go back and finish the introduction.
I highly advise bringing your essay to a Writing Center tutor. If you go, make sure you bring the assignment and the essay/s you are responding to.
An Education
In her essays, College is a Waste of Time and Money and The Case Against College, Caroline Bird tries to persuade readers that college is indeed a waste for most students. To what extent do you agree or disagree with her? Make sure that you respond directly to a few of her main arguments. It is possible to determine that some of her ideas are valid, but others are not. That’s fine. Just make your stance clear in your thesis statement. You can refer to one or both of Bird’s essays in your analysis. As “evidence”, you may also include references to outside sources (no more than two or three), information from interviews with others, and personal experience. In the final analysis, would you recommend a college education for most young adults?
