Introduction: The Benefits, and Drawbacks, of Computerization
In crime analysis, it’s important to remember that computer applications are not an end unto themselves, but a means of accomplishing tasks—usually analyzing data and
presenting the results of the analysis—that existed before the computer applications were available.
Initial Post Instructions
Computer mapping programs instead of paper wall maps; database applications instead of file cards; word processors instead of typewriters and drafting
tables…clearly, the age of computers has brought much to the crime analysis profession. But does it have any drawbacks? In gaining so much in terms of productivity
and efficiency, have we also lost anything? What should we be careful to keep from the past while forging the future? Consider the types and functions of crime
analysis outlined in the “Fundamentals of Crime Analysis” chapter and suggest ways that computer applications might both help and hurt these fundamental processes.

· In your main posting, provide at least one in-text citation (in proper APA format) along with an associated reference list (in proper APA format) at the end of the

Introduction to Crime Analysis and Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office is a suite of computer applications that work together and share a common language. It is the most popular suite of computer applications in the
world, which is why we use Office in this class and not some other package.
Together, the four applications do almost everything a crime analyst needs: data access, cleaning, management, and analysis (Access); statistics and charting (Excel);
publications (Word); and presentations (PowerPoint). Office does not, alas, assist with crime mapping, which is why a separate course in GIS is necessary.
This week, we’ll introduce you to the conventions of Microsoft Office as well as install the files you’ll need for the rest of the class. This week, you must do the
following:
1. Install the needed software. For this class, you will need Microsoft Office Professional, which includes Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Even if you already
have Office, you may be missing Access if you have the Standard, Home, or Student versions instead of the Professional version.
1. If you do not wish to purchase the software, you can download a 60-day trial from the site linked in the course header.
2. However you obtain the software, install it early in the week so that we can troubleshoot any problems. I don’t want to get a flurry of e-mails in Week 2 saying you
don’t have Access or you can’t get it to work. Now is the time to iron out those problems.
2. Complete the readings for this week (also located in Course Documents).
3. Download and unzip the file package for your version of Office, located in the course header. If you have never worked with compressed folders before, you must
first “unzip” or “extract” the files in this archive to your C: drive or your “My Documents” folder.
4. Complete the following reading:
1. IACA Exploring Crime Analysis: Chapter 1 (in Course Documents)
5. Post any problems in the “What Questions Do You Have?” forum. Again, it’s best to do these steps as early in the week as possible so that you don’t get behind in
Week 2
2. In what ways is the title Citizen Kane ironic, but also accurate?
3. List some of the innovative/distinguishing characteristic of the sound track (sound effects + music).
4. What is the meaning of ROSEBUD?
Conclusion.
You can answer the questions in whichever form you want, but make sure you answer all the questions and follow instructions written.
Don’t forget to cite the film in Chicago Manual style.
