COURSE DESCRPTION
New Hollywood, also termed “Post – cl assical Hollywood” or “American New Wave”,
refers the period from the late – 1960s to the early – 1980s when a new generation of
young filmmakers came to prominence in Hollywood, influencing the types of motion
pictures produced, their production and marketing, and the way major studios
approached filmmaking.
The director was acknowledged as the key authorial role (“auteur”) in New Hollywood
films, which is the central idea that will be explored in the course.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
Students will achieve:
– a broad introductory knowledge of a diversity of key motion pictures leading to ,
and from, New Hollywood
– a basic understanding of the key social – historical context s that allowed for the
establishment and demise of New Hollywood
– a general comprehension of the key New Hollywood filmmakers
– a basic understanding of the key narrative innovations identified with New
Hollywood
– a general comprehension of the key formal innovations identified with New
Hollywood
– a general comprehension of the key technol ogical innovations identified with
New Hollywood
– the basic ability to analyse the motion picture arts by applying conventional
academic methodologies.
EVALUATION
1 . Q uizzes (60%)
• There are 2 Quizzes, each of equal value for 30%. Each quiz is meant as a
summative assessment of the students’ ability to comprehend the elements
presented in the course.
3. Final Research Paper (40 %)*
• The Final Research Paper is a practical assignment worth 40%. This
assignment is meant to be a comprehensive assessment of the student ’ s
comprehension of the elements learned throughout the course. This assignment
is due Friday, June 2 5

citations and properly formatted bibliography;

– concern a min. of 5 differe nt subjects regarding the explicit subject
matter of the course; each of these elements must be approved by the
Professor
– concern a min. 3 motion pictures and a min. 3 filmmakers
