My Virtual Child Question Set 3
1. Have there been any environmental events in your child’s first 2 1/2 years that you think might
have influenced his or her behavior? On what do you base your hypotheses?

Brian had to change daycares due to the fact that the one he was in before was for infants. He
was at first excited to change but within a week was clinging and crying more often, and had trouble
cooperating with the daycare provider. The ratio was 3 to 1 child-adult and is now at a 5 to 1 child-
adult ratio. He has had to learn how to socialize more with children his age. He is recognizing gender
roles. I am also pregnant, but have yet to tell Brian about it.

2. How is your child progressing on typical toddler issues, such as learning household rules, learning to
follow routines, listening to you, developing self control and learning to get along with other children?

He is very concerned with pleasing me so household rules and listening to me are things that he
is good at. He will usually need support and guidance in following routines. He has developed self-
control in being potty trained and rarely having accidents. He is learning to get along with others. He
is not aggressive. If he does get aggressive its short lived and he gets over it very quickly.

3. Analyze your own parenting philosophy and practices. What principles from social learning theory,
Bowlby, Ainsworth, Piaget, Vygotsky, information processing theory, developmental neuroscience and
other theories do you appear to have relied on in making your parenting choices or interpreting your
child’s behavior? Include three principles/theorists from the above list in your answer.

Bowlby was focused on security and safety. Security is best provided by a specific individual
and is seen as a “home base.” Brian has grown into a close relationship with my partner and I, but still
needs to check back with us in new situations. Bowlby suggests that as they become more
independent, they will progressively roam away from their secure base (p. 166). That is the case with
Brian. We stay near by in situations in case he needs to check in with us.

Piaget’s “Substage 6: Beginnings of thought,” state that children can imagine where objects
might be and plot out pathways in their heads in order to find those objects (p. 137). Brian and I play a
lot of hide and seek games. He has become much better at searching for things around the house.

Vygotsky suggests that working with mentors to solve problems is a good way of learning. It is
not only good for them to see a new way of doing something, but it is also provides assistance,
instruction, and motivation. In a social learning setting they are able to get an aspect of the culture
that they are in (p. 216). Brian is very good at problem solving, but runs into problems at times.
Instead of solving them for him, I ask him what he could do differently in order to solve that problem.
He has also become aware of his gender and can associate what are girl toys and what are boy toys. He
has developed an understanding of gender role in the social setting of daycare.
