Assessment Task 3 – Individual assignment (40%)
Assignment 3 (Individual Assignment):
Due: Friday of week 10
Length: No more than 2000 words (without tables, figures and list of references)
Case Study
Please read the following case:
Bennett, D. (2014), “Inside Monsanto, America’s Third-Most-Hated Company”, Bloomberg Businessweek, 3 July, (Available at http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-07-
03/gmo-factory-monsantos-high-tech-plans-to-feed-the-world)
In light of the case, please respond to the following questions:
Bennett (2014) has termed Monsanto as “one of the most hated corporations in America”? Do you consider it a fair comment? Please justify your response.
Brandon Mitchener, spokesman for Monsanto, has defended the cultivation of GM crops in a recent statement claiming that the opponents of GM crops are ignoring science
and putting ??populism before the facts’ (http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2014/06/eu-plan-member-states-decide-cultivation-gm-crops). Please provide your own opinion
after considering the views from both sides.
Use wide research to gather evidence for your perspective. Also look at the Monsanto official website at www.monsanto.com. You must demonstrate your ability to
understand and incorporate ideas from academic (i.e., peer-reviewed) journals and other information sources, and show consistent argumentation throughout (not a mere
description). Use relevant theories and examples in order to substantiate your arguments.
