Business plan for Singapore
I am pleased to have you on board for this project; let’s get down to business. Our pa rent corporation ,
Boiler Maker Global Business (BMGB) , is a diversified conglomerate similar to Samsung, Huawei, or
ALFA. BMGB is currently developing a handful of new products and to test in various markets, and our
team has been appointed to provide information on new potential markets. In order to assist our
corporate overlords in deciding which locations will be most advantageous, researchers are instructed to
use their knowledge and research abilities to investigate a specific location’s political, social, and economic
situations to produce a thorough report called a “backgrounder. ” Following are more details about the
deliverables, how your work will be assessed , and our schedule.
Choosing a location . Because we need to find, evaluate and present information on specific locations, we have
been given some flexibility in choosing our location. We should choose a location we are somewhat
familiar with, that is a place we have lived in or visited numerous t imes . The location ’s population should
be focused and localized between 500 thousand and 15 million people. Researchers should think in terms
of “ Metropolitan s tatistical a rea” ( MSA) , “ Core- based statistical a rea” ( CBSA) , or other regionalized
markets as opposed to an entire country .
Information. From your chosen location , researchers will uncover and synthesi ze information regarding :
• Current political climate – political system, impending elections , general stability, local market
competitors , legal system , etc.
• Demographic information – median age, education, income, civil unrest, racial makeup. Keep in
mind these people represent potential clients, competitors, employees, etc.
• Financial situation – currency type and fluctuation, economy, employment rates, main economic
sectors , etc.
This is not a definitive list of topics to cover , nor should you attempt an exhaustive report .
Design and arrangement. Our decision makers are busy and have a variety of interests; our reports will need
to be accessible to a variety of readers with a range of interests and attention spans, so they will need to
present information in a variety of forms. Additionally, our readers will undoubtedly be reading Wikipedia
on their own: they require more than that. Your job is research – preferably in multiple languages – and
to synthesize the information into a focused ov erview that in troduces a location and provides information
that allows others to make an inform ed decision from the various potential locations.
Deliverables. This unit will require researchers to produce a number of documents:
• A “brief” plan ( 30pts) that outlines you r rationale for choosing a location , the current knowledge
you may already have , and your proposed research methods for finding more .
• In- design practice document ( 30pts) where researchers practice using the design tools to
produce a professional report.
• W eekly work memos ( 3 @ 2 0 pts/ea . ) to keep others updated on your progress with this project
• The backgrounder a first draft (30pts) and a final (70pts)
• 3 – minute Presentation ( 30pts) that gives the entire team a n update on your progress thus far
ENGL420i – BMGB Tau Division
Assessment : These will be explained and negotiated during the unit but for now, grading will include the
following criteria
• Professional ethos (see handout)
• Formatting
• Innovation/creativity
• Design – layout, visuals, white space
• Content – length, depth, appropriateness
• Clarity & Conciseness
• Citation – proper, consistent form and appropriate number of sources, primary and secondary
• Grammar and mechanics
• Display of process
• Participation in peer review and instructor review
Schedule. The tentative schedule below is subject to change . Bolded items are graded assignments that
correspond directly to the deliverables listed above. A more accurate calendar is available on our website :
why not visit it now and look ? Projects often require changes, but researchers are responsible for staying
current and are encouraged to check our website calendar before every class. Additional note: readings
always entail a forum response due two hour s prior to class time on the day the reading is due.
