Assignment: Write a letter to the editor of The Globe and Mail that is either critical or supportive of Margaret Wente’s column “Inside the Entitlement Generation.”
. Demonstrate knowledge of the argument in Wente’s editorial
a) Generally speaking, does Wente appear to argue that childhood and adolescence are “disappearing” or “expanding”? Does Wente seem to think that today’s
generation of young people are more “adult-like” or “adolescent” in their behaviour, values, and aspirations?
b) What reasons does Wente offer to support her argument about this generation of young people? Does Wente assign any blame for these perceived changes? If
so, who or what does she think is responsible?
2. Take a clear position for or against Wente’s argument
3. Support your position with knowledge you have gathered from this course
Depending on what position you take, you will want to use one or more of the following: theories of socialization, social construction of childhood, the theories on
the expansion/disappearance of childhood and adolescence today (e.g. entitlement, hyper-parenting, rising influence of mass media and “Consuming Kids,” adult
obligations, decreased adult supervision), and/or theories of anomie, riots, Durkheim, Year of Discontent, etc.
MARGINS/FONT: Use the normal, “default” page margins of one inch. The type should be New Times Roman, Verdana, or Arial. The size of the type must be
between 10 and 12-font. The lines must be double-spaced.
STYLE: It is an opinion piece, but your opinions need to be supported. There are no right or wrong answers, but you will be evaluated based on how well you
support the position you take with sociological concepts, ideas, and theories, as well as facts and information provided in the lectures and readings. It is also
meant for a general audience (i.e., readers of The Globe and Mail). You should use your knowledge of sociology, but your writing should be accessible to someone
who has not taken this course.
REFERENCING: You do not need to provide references. You do not need a bibliography. Attribution is encouraged (e.g., “Wente argues that…”
