Arts and Humanities, Essay on the theme of Dwelling!
Construct a thesis and write a paper based on one of the following questions:
1. How does the theme of time (e.g. memory, anticipation of the future) relate to dwelling in some specific text or texts we have covered?
2. What is the significance of Heidegger?s choice of a bridge as an illustration, and how might that relate to Calatrava?
3. You are free to write a paper on dwelling and Bachelard.
4. You may write a paper on dwelling and Winter?s Bone.
As I noted regarding your previous paper, these are not themselves theses, but starting points for theses. Be sure to avoid generalizations and to be selective and very specific in your textual references, which will function as evidence to support your thesis.
Purpose and Reader:
Again, imagine your reader to be another Babson student who has read the text and discussed it in class (in other words, an educated reader already engaged in a sophisticated conversation about dwelling). The paper asks you to interest such a reader in your own very specific conclusion. It also asks you to quote (and cite!) the text and to guide such a reader through several passages of the text itself so that he or she can see how and why you have reached your conclusion. In other words, your essay should be engaging, specific, well-organized, and convincing. More importantly, it should present a conclusion that you arrived at not on first sight but after careful, close readings of the text. No outside research is required for this paper. The more your thesis is an exciting discovery for yourself, the easier it will be to interest a reader in it and to make a case for it.
Do not write on more than two books, be more specific.
The book and article choice is as follows : Chose one or two of the texts below to write and quote throughout the essay
Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space.
Plato, Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo.
Oyama Shiro, A Man with No Talents.
Junichiro Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows.
James Welch, The Death of Jim Loney.
Marx, ?The Meaning of Human Requirements.?
Kafka, ?The Burrow.?
Kafka, ?In the Penal Colony.?
Flusser, ?The Challenge of the Migrant.?
Simmel, ?The Metropolis and Mental Life.?
Foucault, ?The Body of the Condemned.?
