A HINT REGARDING WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS (the following will perhaps save you from having a written assignment returned to you for further work): You will note that most of the written assignments in this course ask you to reflect on your own developmental experience and write an autobiographical analysis of that period in your life. It is not necessary to do additional research for these assignments, but it is assumed that you will include in your analysis how your experience compares and contrasts with the theoretical propositions and research that you have been reading about in the text or listening to on the Watson CDs. Without this connection to what you have been learning, your essay becomes just a story and does not reflect what you have been learning and Integrating the Developmental Perspectives and Theories.
First:
•Think of a particular time in your childhood, e.g., age 4, age 5, age 10, age 11.
•Use Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological approach to development (Chapter 1 in the Feldman text), to place yourself in a fairly complete developmental context. Write completely about the following five systems (label which level you are talking about when writing your essay): Note: Do not assume that your reader is already familiar with Bronfenbrenner’s approach!
Microsystem: Describe:
•Your family at that time
•Your school and teacher at that time
•Your peer group at that time
•Your surrounding community at that time
Mesosystem: Describe:
•How your parents interacted with your peers at that time
•How your parents interacted with your school and teacher at that time
•Whether your parents helped with schoolwork at that time
•How your community supported your school or activities (e.g., sports)
Exosystem: Describe:
•Your parents’ jobs
•Vacations you took
•Whether there was a divorce in your family
Macrosystem: Describe:
•Your ethnic heritage
•Your religious affiliations
•Your social class (e.g., poor, working-class, middle-class, wealthy)
•What was going on in the world at that time (e.g., Supreme Court decisions, wars, economics, etc.)
Chronosystem: Describe:
•How a single historical event (such as the terrorist attacks of 2001) affected your development at that time (or if there was more than one single historical event write about each one),
•and/or How gradual historical changes going on at that time affected your development (e.g., the change in the number of women who worked outside the home; a change in the types of jobs available; a change from having no television to having television).
Second:
Using another developmental theory besides Bronfenbrenner’s, explain how the theory applies to you at that time in your childhood.
General Instructions for Written Assignments
Your written assignment is intended to test your understanding of important concepts and discover how to sharpen your intellectual skills of analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and application. The intent of the written assignment is to provide an opportunity to more fully describe, explain, and analyze the books and other sources. When you submit your written assignment, you may want to submit it as an .RTF file attachment, as these usually retain your formatting.
