Choose one of the assignments below and finalize it before the last day of class, July 9, 2014. In
choosing either of the assignments, you are required to engage directly with a topic through
research or with an event and then write about it. In doing so, you should provide a summary of
your findings, then analyze and relate your findings to the readings from class. Specifically, you
are required to incorporate at least five separate readings in one way or another into your
analysis of the research material you end up with. One reading is in this context defined as
either a) one article or text from the online pdf course collection on Canvas, or b) one weekly
assigned section from the Kottak and Kozaitis textbook. The written assignment should be five
pages long (double spaced, 1 inch margins, font 12 Times New Roman).

1. Choose a topic or other point of departure that focuses on Brazil, as represented in the course
readings, the media, and other material that you come across. Since the soccer world cup is
being held in Brazil this summer, there should be no shortage of sources! Your paper should
have a focus of your own choosing that nevertheless relates specifically to some of the themes
presented and discussed in this course. You may also take the world cup itself as a point of
departure, and discuss how Brazil is being presented or represents itself through a variety of
venues and fora. Either way, you should be able to provide an analysis that incorporates both
holistic and comparative perspectives. Please use this book, On Being Different: Diversity and Multiculturalism in the North American Mainstream, and any other four reading sources of your liking. Thank you in advance.
