Rogerian Argument Essay Assignment

The Rogerian argument is a form of argument in which both sides of the argument are presented, validity of both sides is qualified, and hostility is removed from the argument. You should focus on presenting the validity of your side of the argument, while taking the opposing side of the argument into consideration. Keep in mind that, usually, in a Rogerian argument, the thesis is presented at the end of the argument, after you have presented both sides of the argument. You will want to focus on building your case. Make sure to think about how we can come to a compromised solution on the topic at hand.

Minimum of 5pages, double-spaced, MLA formatted Rogerian argument. Make sure to have a clear, defined thesis. You must include a MLA formatted works cited page; the works cited page is NOT part of your 5 page requirement. Your essay must include direct in-text citations from at least three scholarly sources. NO websites as a resource for this essay.

Your introduction should introduce the argument at hand and why it is viewed in two different lights. The body of your essay should remove hostility and approach understanding of each viewpoint. Provide your position, state the context in which your position works, and provide the benefits to your side of the argument. Make sure to address the opposing viewpoint and not merely indicate that it is not the “good” way to look at the argument. The conclusion of your essay should leave a clear understanding of your viewpoint and its benefits – this is where you will solidify your position and present your thesis statement.

Introduction: Present the argument at hand. Give information on why it is relevant and why it is highly debatable with very strong emotions on both sides.

Body Portion 1 (this may be more than one paragraph): Present one side of the argument. What is the goal of this side? What facts are being used to address this side of the argument? What valid points are being made? Use evidence, statistics, quotes, etc. from your research to reinforce this.

Body Portion 2 (this may be more than one paragraph): Present the other side of the argument. What is the goal of this side? What facts are being used to address this side of the argument? What valid points are being made? Use evidence, statistics, quotes, etc. from your research to reinforce this.

Conclusion: Come to a common solution and present your thesis. Draw conclusions from the research you have done and create common ground.

Keep in mind that the Rogerian Argument’s focus is NOT to state why your side of the argument is better. You must fully review both sides of the argument in order to gain an understanding and bring some sort of compromise to the approach. This means you will need to compromise with your beliefs on one of these “heated” arguments, and incorporate a solution in your conclusion that will compromise and bring both sides together. The goal is to address facts from each side of the argument and come to a common solution.Your conclusion should NOT state, “Therefore, same sex marriage is wrong and should not be allowed.” It should address “Both sides of the argument have been presented, and while those for and those against may not be able to ever see eye to eye on the topic, a compromised solution is possible. That compromised solution is…” That final statement is your thesis – the compromised solution to the argument.

01.   MLA Header typed onto first page
02.   Page number with last name in top right header of each page
03.   Clear introduction
04.   Solid, assertive thesis statement – this should be located in your concluding paragraph. It should not be a question.
05.   Transitional statements between paragraphs.
06.   Introductory elements to your quotes – do not leave your quotations as stand-alone sentences. They must be introduced and explained.
07.   Cohesion – do you have a clear, logical train of thought throughout the essay?
08.   Comprehensive conclusion
09.   An original title – not the assignment name.
10.   At least three outside scholarly sources for your research
11.   You must incorporate at least one direct quote from each research source for a minimum of three
