An Analysis of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Paper instructions:
III: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – The Character:
Describe Mr. Hyde and what he stands for. What does the character, within the novel, illustrate about human nature?
(Try to toy with the question as it is. If that doesn’t work, you can, without straying far away from the novel, ask yourself questions: Are Victorian morals or other aspects of Victorian ideology and advances in knowledge (Darwin, criminology, science, medicine, etc., etc.) manifested in that character, fighting a battle within him, affecting the narrative? Remember that your analysis should be based in the novel; you must first and foremost show us that these aspects of culture, should you decide to write about that, are within the original text).
Sources:
Your main source of support should be textual evidence (quotes and references) from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by robert luois stevenson. Remember to explain how the quotes illustrate your point. Don’t “dump” in a quote unannounced or without comment.
At least two outside sources should be consulted. Both must be “serious scholarship” (i.e. essays or books on literature, history, scholarly essays of literary criticism, etc.). Remember that the Safe Assignment identifies the sources of your work, whether you have plagiarized or not. Unfortunately, many, many students used sparknotes.com for Essay # 2, for instance. That is absolutely not a scholarly source. When in doubt, email me information about the source.
