Since critically examining ourselves is one of the goals of this course, this assignment will ask you to write about a challenging intercultural experience you have had. After discussing an autoethnographic essay and the premises of this method, you will not only describe the narrative, but also employ intercultural concepts to step back and better understand what happened in your narrative. Two of the primary goals of autoethnography are 1) self reflexivity and 2) theorizing. Self-reflexivity involves examining yourself, your responses, mistakes, and successes in specific situations. It also asks you to consider yourself from another person’s perspective. Theorizing encourages you to briefly detach from the experience and attempt to explain the events in more complete ways. You must have at least 12 academic sources, at least 8 of which will be located outside of class.
