Ambrose Bierce’s stories, or Stephen Crane’s “Mystery of Heroism,”
For each of these topics, decide how you would compose a coherent essay that you could write in roughly one hour. Draw your thesis from the question, and plan what passages of the story you would refer to and quote in order to provide evidence for the points you are making. Make use of the interaction between literary elements to ground your discussion: evolution of character, relationship to setting, language choice, perspective of narrative voice. Your essay should have a thorough, introductory paragraph, two or more body paragraphs that develop focused points in your argument, and a conclusion.

Draw up an outline for how you would answer each question, no more than half a page long. You will bring BOTH outlines to class on the day of the exam, Wednesday, June 11. At the beginning of class, I will give you ONE of these topics, and you will write your essay. At the end of the exam (1 hour), turn in both outlines, along with your completed essay.

1. Choosing one of Ambrose Bierce’s stories, or Stephen Crane’s “Mystery of Heroism,” analyze how the story uses narrative voice, perspective, characterization, imagery and/or setting to show the complexity and grave consequences of war. How does the story challenge conventional notions of heroism?

2. Choosing either “The Revolt of ‘Mother,’” “The Passing of Grandison,” “The Wife of His Youth,” “The Open Boat,” “Sister Josepha,” “Chickamauga,” or “The Problem of Old Harjo,” give a working definition of realism or naturalism—whichever is appropriate to the story—and show how the concept applies, discussing the evolution of character in terms of one or more characters’ relationship to the environment. In the story you choose, consider these questions: How much control does the central character(s) have? How do characters change? What is the significance of that change? You will want to draw on specific passages and look at how language choice and images convey a sense of the character and the setting.
