The module is assessed through coursework (100%)
You are required to write an essay which answers the following questions:
1. Write an essay on ARCH and GARCH Models and their use in Finance
studies. Please support your answer with formulae and graphs. Use any
two of the following countries stock market indexes: Portugal, Italy,
Greece and Spain (PIGS countries) to obtain results (50%).
You are not allowed to use Yahoo finance to obtain data.
Tips:
I. Provide evidence of all the diagnostic tests needed
II. Support your answer with graphs
III. Provide statistical evidence regarding which model to detect the
most appropriate for the data.
IV. Summarise your answers in organised tables using outrege2 or
estesto commands.
2. Use the data set from assignment data 2014.xlsx file and estimate the
following models of determinants of banks profitability by utilising your
knowledge on Pooled OLS (POLS) and panel data analysis. Summarise
your estimation and provide analytical and critical discussion on the
results. Elaborate the cons and pros of each model. Please support your
answer with formulae and graphs (50%).

Effect (RE), etc.

Word limit:
Your answer should not exceed 3,000 words, not including titles, bibliography and appendixes.
The word count must be shown at the end of the assignment. Work that exceeds this word limit
will receive a mark penalty as follows:
Over word limit,
0–10% — no penalty
10–20% — raw score minus 10 marks
20–30% — raw score minus 20 marks
30–40% — raw score minus 30 marks
Submission Notes
The essay must be word processed. (Please follow the instructions by the Full Time Office)
Bibliography
All works cited or referred to must be properly referenced and listed in a bibliography. You should
use a recognised system such as the Harvard system.
Deadline
The deadline for submission is Monday 14 May 2014. Your essay must be submitted
electronically: you will receive instructions explaining how to do this from the Full Time Office in
the near future.
