Admission/Application Essay

Select a key term or definition from one of the secondary readings we have looked at thus far (“Constructing Normalcy” by Lennard J. Davis, “Reassigning Meaning” by Simi Linton, and “A Typology” by Ato Quayson), and use it as a tool to explore the role(s) of disability in a primary text of your choosing. How can the term/definition enhance our understanding of how disability operates in the text? As you think through this question, consider how your primary text can help improve and develop our understanding of the key term/definition. Does the text modify the term/definition in any way, and if so, what is the significance of this adaptation?
Write an essay in which you explore and discuss Flannery O’Connor’s use of disability in “The Lame Shall Enter First” as a feature of the literary grotesque. For this assignment, you will need to carefully document what you see as characteristics of the grotesque by citing examples from O’Connor’s story. Select a brief passage from the text and perform a very focused close reading, looking at such elements as diction, syntax, tone, context, and the like. What themes, patterns and/or objectives does your passage spotlight? How does your passage demonstrate the way O’Connor uses disability as part of her literary aesthetic—as a component of the grotesque–to express her views about the world, Christianity, humanity, etc.?
