Our schools are filled with special needs children who are not getting appropriate educational services. While some people argue that those children should be “mainstreamed” in “inclusion” classes, others argue that separate programs should be developed for children with handicapping conditions. Given the interrelated nature of development, meaning that a deficiency in one or more areas of development—physical, social, linguistic, psychological, emotional, and cognitive—may affect the other areas, what sorts of observable data would you need to collect about children with disabilities to help you take a position on the issue?

As a prospective early childhood educator you are expected to know how to identify characteristics of the learning disabled and demonstrate competencies in assessing special needs children with respect to a broad range of developmental areas. You are, therefore, required to 15 hours of field work carefully observing a child or a group of children with some forms of developmental disabilities and share your findings in a report. You are recommended to do your observations most preferably in a program for special needs children, but an inclusion classroom will do just as fine if you have difficulty finding a segregated classroom.

Your report should be between 3-5 pages in length, and it must adhere to the following criteria:

Part A. Basic Characteristics (25 points)
1. Describe the school or program that you visited—include information about its location, population, and services. (NYC)
2. Describe the class that you observed? Did your observation take place in a mainstream, an inclusion, a segregated or a reverse mainstream classroom? What age group did you observe?
3. Describe the range of developmental disabilities in that class.

Part B. Observed Interactions (35 points)
1. Describe any types of interactions between a child and the classroom teacher. Was this an example of play, a lesson, therapy, etc.? Next, describe in detail what happened during that specific event which you observed.
2. Describe any types of interactions among the children. Were they involved in a play activity, verbal exchange, discussion, etc.? Next, describe in detail what happened during that specific episode you observed.

Part C. Interpreting your findings (40 points)
1. How did the activities or phenomena observed in that classroom connect to theories and/or issues that we have discussed in class?
2. Reflect on what you learned from observing that particular classroom, and articulate a position on any issue concerning special education.
