You must further tailor the TMA to your area of interest. For example, question one could focus on fathers in relation to education, or the parents of disabled children in relation to early years’ services. However you must make this focus clear in your introduction.
Content
Your answer should be a critical discussion of the question and you are expected to demonstrate that you can search for and evaluate material beyond that provided in the module books and Learning Guides. Therefore your TMA must include material that you have searched for and include an evaluation of each source making it clear why you felt it was relevant to the question.
Your TMA should conclude by providing some key points for practice.
Although this final TMA requires you to search more widely for material on your chosen topic, the module materials themselves provide a good starting point. Chapter 3 of Changing Children’s Services covers a range of perspectives on working with parents, summarising some aspects of the literature and also providing references that you can follow up. The associated Learning Guides also contain links to articles and sources of information. There is also material in Learning Guides 17 and 18 that will be relevant to some questions.
There is no exact number of additional sources you should use. You will discuss in the online tutorial the balance between drawing on too many sources to have space to really evaluate them, and too few to represent the contemporary state of the debate on your topic. On balance, in a TMA of this length, the emphasis is on fewer sources but ones you have evaluated as being relevant and of good quality.
As a rough guide approximately five additional sources of evidence could provide a good basis for demonstrating your searching and evaluation skills. This means you should also consider the types of material you find. Your sources should include at least some journal articles.
Evaluating
For each one you should be clear about the methodology, conclusions, strengths and weaknesses. You are then showing the skill of identifying the strengths of these arguments as well as an awareness of what they are. For example, if it is a piece of research; what kind of research? Who was involved? Is it relatively up to date? If it is old research – what is your reason for still including it.
Structure:
Introduction – A clear introduction will be particularly vital in this TMA. Spell out here the narrative you are going to explore and if you are focusing on a particular group of parents or service than make sure this is clear. There are likely to be two or three main arguments or debates around your topic and your introduction should be clear about what they are and how you are going to contrast them.
Main body – In the body of the assignment you are as usual constructing a critical argument. In addition, when discussing the literature you are including you should clearly explain your choices and evaluate their value in your research and the construction of your argument.
Conclusion– Your conclusion should summarise your main findings and also draw out between three and five points relevant to practice.
