2. Consider the internally and externally focused practices of the organization for which you work or one with which you are familiar. Why or why not? Support your assertions.
3. This chapter made me think about a movie called “Up in the Air” which stars George Clooney. One of the storylines in the movie is that George Clooney’s character works for a company that handles “downsizings”. Essentially Clooney’s character flies all over the country and serves as a hired “transition expert”. He is hired by companies to fire employees.
Clooney’s company comes up with the idea that in order to save money they will start firing people over a web cam/video teleconference session. The movie illustrates how it is sometimes more effective to handle situations on a face-to-face basis where each person involved can clearly see and hear the verbal and non-verbal communication. In short, the switch to video teleconference firing in the movie is aborted after an employee that is fired via video teleconference commits suicide.
Determining when and where communication methods such as video teleconferencing should be used can be challenging but managers and leaders get paid to make challenging decisions.
4. Read the Parable of the Sadhu article located in this Week’s Electronic Reserve Readings. What would you have done had you been in that situation? 6. Class,
What are some more traditional companies that are challenged with instances of failed corporate ethics/social responsibility but their actions? One company’s past performance that immediately comes to mind is General Electric (GE). GE fought the US government for several decades to try and avoid having to pay for clean-up of PCBs that they deposited in New York’s Hudson River.
What are other examples of companies that have exhibited poor ethics/corporate social responsibility? What were the consequences?
GE has since made huge strides in its many divisions to be socially responsible which as a direct result of knowing their operating environment.
