Squnrt® Brand
In mid-summer 2001, Kate Cox, the brand manager at Dr Pepper/ Seven Up, Inc.
responsible for Squirt, began to draft the brand’s annual advertising and promotion
plan. Squirt is a caffeine-free, low-sodium carbonated soft drink brand with a distinc-
tive blend of grapefruit juices that gives it a tangy, fresh citrus taste. Squirt is the best-
selling carbonated grapefruit soft drink brand in the United States.
Cox believed that market targeting and product positioning might require atten-
tion early in Squirt’s advertising and promotion plan development. Both topics were
highlighted in a June 2001 presentation by the brand’s advertising agency, Foote,
Cone & Belding, shortly after she assumed responsibility for Squirt. Actions by com-
petitors, notably Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola; a recent dip in Squirt case sales volume;
and implications of the growing Hispanic community in markets where Squirt was
popular were foremost in her mind.
