Analyze the film Raise the Red Lantern, focusing on the negative side of Confusian ideas or feudal ethical codes, which brought about numerous tragedies suffered by the Chinese women for thousands of years.

Assignment: 60% of your final grade

Write a critical analysis of one of the films we watched together in class. It should be an insightful essay, not just a simple retelling of the story with shallow or superficial analysis. Do NOT write a review. The topic can be of your own choice, or based on one of the examples below.

Grading will be based on the clarity of your thesis, the insightfulness and cohesiveness of your argument, and appropriate use of secondary sources.

Examples:

1. Analyze the various ways in which the films screened in class during this term portray the lives of women in China. Things you may consider are the pernicous influence of Confucian ideology as well as the tensions between modern and traditional lifestyles (you may choose one film or more films to base your analysis on).
2. Analyze the artistic use of colours in Zhang Yimou’s films screened in class during the term, particularly in his films Red Sorghum (1988) and Raise the Red Lantern (1991).
3. Make an academic analysis of Red Sorghum from your own perspective.

4. Make a character analysis of the wife, the four misstresses and the maid
Yan’er in the film Raise the Red Lantern .

5. Analyze the film Raise the Red Lantern, focusing on the negative side of Confusian ideas or feudal ethical codes, which brought about numerous tragedies suffered by the Chinese women for thousands of years.
6. Compare and contrast the two films The Story of Qiu Ju (1992) and Ermo
(1994), especially the similarities and differences in character between the two
female protagonists and the different aims pursued by them.

7. Analyze the film Shower (1999) from the perspective of generation gap
between the father and the elder son or from the point of view of conflicts caused by
tradition vs. modernity.

8. Choose any of the films screened in class during the term and analyze it based
on your own topic. Or you may choose two or more films to compare. Do NOT
write about the same film(s) that you already chose for your mid-term paper.
