Students are required to identify a current topic related to new product development which is debated in trade magazines (e.g. MarketingWeek), news sources (e.g. BBC, Guardian, The Times) and further use relevant academic literature and they to develop a critical discussion on the topic.

Students will create their own essay title to reflect the topic of debate.

Specific criteria for choosing the topic is provided by the module team to ensure students are guided on their choice of topic.

Two in-class sessions are dedicated to guidance and advice on the essay.

Students are briefed on the assessment in week 1 and encouraged to start the work early in order to gain feedback and start on the academic reading well in advance. Much of the reading for the weekly sessions is relevant to the essay.

Rationale: This assessment is included to exposure student to critical and independent thinking and writing. The essay will require students to reflect on the practical learning as well as the theoretical concepts introduced during the module.

Learning & Teaching principles: This assessment tests students’ ability to think independently and use secondary data to discuss a given issue/topic identify arguments that support/critiques established views.
