Income inequality gap: A Genre Analysis
You will find three articles all related to one particular issue (Income inequality gap). One article from a scholarly/academic journal, one from a trade journal, and one from a popular magazine. Make sure, the three articles are from these three different journals.
The purpose in writing this is to inform readers in this field (Political Science) write and how that writing is similar and different from the way the field is written about for lay people. To succeed on this assignment, you must read the articles thoroughly a couple times.
Most writers find the organization of this essay to be a challenge because you cannot assume your audience has read the articles that you are analyzing.
After you have written the essay’s introductory paragraph, summarize the three articles that you will be discussing. Summarize for the reader the article title, its author, the journal or magazine in which it is published, the article’s thesis (or hypothesis) and its main ideas. The summaries should include attribution tags and citations. The summary portion of the essay should be no longer than 200 words.
The rest of the essay’s body should analyze the articles using these questions as a guide:
1. How does the article use titles?
2. Who is the audience?
3. What is the purpose of the publication?
4. How do they introduce their topic? How long does it take? What do they talk about in doing so? Do they cite other sources?
5. How do they present a main thesis?
6. How do they establish ethos (credibility and character) of the writer?
7. How do they present an argument? What types of evidence is offered as proof? What type of reasoning is used?
8. How does the article conclude?
9. Are citations used?
This part of the essay should be driven by an interesting thesis that sums up what is required of professional writing in political science field of study and how it differs from writing for lay audiences. Give the essay a conclusion that brings closure and include a references or works cited page at the end.
Though this is not a comparison/contrast paper, it is useful to think of organizing it that way. Further, you will want to organize the body of your paper around the topic you are analyzing rather than going through each genre/article one at a time. For example, you want to talk about how each of the genres handles citations of sources and evidence in one section, comparing and contrasting how each genre addresses that particular issue of citation by giving specific examples from the articles.
One thing to keep in mind is that you are not talking about the issue, but the three articles you find though you should summarize them. I attached an example essay.
