Develop a breastfeeding education resource that can be used to support and educate families who are breastfeeding.
• Identify and explain effective strategies that the nurse can employ to support the parent’s choice to breastfeed. The strategies may include the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as outlined by the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Initiative, but only briefly (1-2 short paragraphs max), as new innovative strategies should be identified.
• Identify factors that occur in the birthing room that interfere with the successful initiation of breastfeeding
• Identify factors that occur in the birthing room that support the successful initiation of breastfeeding.
• Describe how a nurse would teach hand expression of breastmilk to a new mother
• Discuss essential educational messages that should be covered with new mothers prior to leaving the hospital.
• Discuss 5 common difficulties encountered by breastfeeding mothers in the first week postpartum and investigate the causes, prevention and management.
• Ensure all key concepts are discussed so that the new parents have a solid foundation of breastfeeding knowledge before discharge from hospital. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
Feeding positions, Breast Engorgement, Hand Expression, Latch,
Engorgement + Milk Stasis = Involoution, Milk Supply, Sore nipples -solutions
Infant Concerns- Pacifiers, Bowel Movement Patterns
