Instructions: Unfortunately in the field of Sport and Recreation Management crisis and controversies can happen which may damage an organization’s financial standing and credibility. Crisis communication plans specify the public relations responsibilities of various staff members during a crisis, and most focus on how information is shared both internally and externally. Effective crisis communication plans may address crises that are deemed likely to occur or are of significant potential impact. Such plans include details regarding how they are to be activated, who should be involved in the crisis management process, who should be contacted regarding the crisis, and what should be said, at least initially. The most important decision that a crisis response team will make is which strategy to employ in responding to the crisis. Such decisions are usually based on the type of crisis and the organization’s history and reputation. By adhering to a number of crisis communications principles, sport public relations professionals and organizational spokespersons can effectively engage media, perhaps the single most difficult aspect of a crisis.
For this assignment, you will develop a comprehensive Communications Plan for one of the assigned following crises:
• Chemical spill in a swimming pool/ arena
• Death or a catastrophic injury to a student athlete
• Incident involving law enforcement outside of competition
• Death or catastrophic injury of a spectator
• Hazing incident and subsequent lawsuit pending
