I. In lbsen’s play, the title An Enemy of the People seemingly refers to Dr. Stockman,
because as Peter Stockman says, his warning about the poisoned water will cause damage
to the town’s ability to generate revenue. Discuss two other characters from the play the
title could also be referring to. In other words, who else was an enemy of the people?
2. Many cultures believe in some sort of afterlife, a Heaven or Jannah where our souls
will hopefully reside after we are done with our mortal bodies. How is the afterlife
portrayed or thought about in the poems “Because I could not stop for death” by Emily
Dickinson, “The Heaven of Animals” by James Dickey, and “The Raven” by Edgar Allen
Poe?
3. Love is one of the most important topics discussed in poetry. The definition of love,
the impact it has on our lives, and the things people do to keep it are common subjects
through time. How is love similar or different in the poems “Sonnet 116” by William
Shakespeare, “Sonnets from the Portuguese 43” by Elizabeth Browning, and the play
“Sure Thing” by David Ives?
4. In class we discussed the thesis of the Piano Lesson as a warning that people need to
move on with their lives. How do Doaker’s monologue about trains on page 1164 (which
was not in the movie! You will have to read it.) and Avery’s dream about the people
with sheep heads on page 1168-1169 relate to this thesis? In other words, how do these
three ideas fit together?
