Length and Point Value: Worth a total of 200 points possible. Please follow the “Essay #2 Rubric.” If you do not include research, in-text citations, and a Works Cited Page, you will automatically fail the assignment. See the Canvas Calendar and/or course schedule for due dates. 4-5 FULL pages, which does not include your Works Cited Page or your Writer’s Memo. If your paper does not meet the minimum page length requirement, the highest grade you can earn is 75%. Your paper must be in proper MLA format (1-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, etc.). You also need a Works Cited Page in correct MLA format. Please include a “Writer’s Memo” (either a half-page Word document). Think of your “Writer’s Memo” as a personal letter to me. Questions to think about: What are your favorite aspects of your paper? What are your writing goals for this paper? What are some of the strengths of your paper? What areas do you still need to work on (or what did you have trouble with?)? Attach your Writer’s Memo, Essay #2, and Works Cited Page in “Assignments” on Canvas – follow the link in Module 3. Requirements: Studying a text for its own sake, as you did for Essay #1, limits the ways that we can extend our understanding of the text. For this paper, we will build upon your literary analysis skills from Essay #1, and now you will put your thesis into a larger conversation about the novel/reading, time period, culture, history, etc. with research. You must develop an arguable, creative, and unique thesis about one theme or one character in one of our course texts. You will develop an argument about a theme or character by integrating research to inform your argument/thesis – putting your research to work, so to speak. What do you learn about one theme or character after you have conducted outside research and filled in a large gap? What argument can you now make using your outside research? You must provide sufficient support for your thesis by incorporating in-text citations from the one of our main course readings (primary source) and three outside/secondary sources that directly support the argument that you are making about a theme or character. All of your sources must be credible library sources – no websites allowed! Watch the library tutorial screencast, and use the library’s website to find your sources (your sources can be from electronic journals from the library’s website NOT Google). Remember sources like Google, dictionary.com, Wikipedia (and any other online encyclopedia), history.com, etc. are not scholarly or credible sources and will not be counted as part of your three sources. You are required to find your sources by using the print and/or electronic collections from the Miami University libraries (books, documentaries, magazine articles, newspaper articles, journals, etc.). You can use any of our course materials as sources if they apply (texts and/or films that we’ve used in class to inform our understanding of our primary text). Use a variety of source incorporation, including direct quotes, and cite all four of your sources. Part of the goal of this assignment is to teach you how to incorporate multiple sources into a paper, so pay particular attention to your MLA in-text citations and your source integration (read over the IntegratingSources PowerPoint/PDF under “Resources” in Module 3). When using outside research, it is important to remember that your ideas should still be the primary focus. You use your sources to help show your points not to stand in for your ideas; therefore, only one block quote allowed. For every blocked quote above the one allowed, you will be deducted points from the “quote incorporation” section on your “Essay #2 Grading Rubric.”
