Managing Organisations Assessment Details

Marks:    10 marks (which is 10% of the unit grade)
Due:    Prior to Midnight on Wednesday 18th March (week 5), 2015.
Task:   In the ‘Assessment Details’ tab on Blackboard you will find the Assignment 1 folder. Inside will be a document titled ‘Assignment 1 tasks’. This document contains a series of publication search tasks (via library databases), referencing tasks and questions associated with the Competing Values Framework CVF). Complete the tasks and questions, then submit your answers by the due date (see below for details of the submit process).
Purpose:    This assignment is designed to achieve three key learning outcomes:
1.   Part of a Manager’s skill-set is the ability to locate specific information from a range of credible sources. The assignment therefore encourages students to become familiar with a Management Information System (MIS) like the Library Databases.
2.   All students will prepare a number of reports throughout their degree. Supporting your information and arguments with appropriate referencing is an important feature of each report. It is therefore important that you understand and follow the appropriate referencing technique.
3.   The CVF questions encourage students to recognise how their own management style fits within the model.
Marking
Criteria:    Marks for each task are detailed on the ‘Assignment 1 Tasks’ document. Correct answers will accurately identify the required information.
Note: to accurately complete the referencing tasks, students should base their answers on the Library’s Harvard Referencing Guide. Answers drawn from an alternate referencing source may not be accepted.
Submit
Process   The assignment is to be submitted via Blackboard. Look for the Assignment submission link in the ‘Assignment 1’ folder. The link is active from week 1 so you can submit any time up to the due date. NB: only one submission is available. Even if the due date has not yet been reached there is no second resubmit opportunity.
The file you submit should be labelled as follows.
Surname initial student code MNG10247 asmt 1.docx
For example – Gillett P 012345 MNG10247 asmt 1.docx
NB: Failure to adopt the correct label will result in the loss of a mark from your total score. Make sure you complete all the required details on the ‘assignment cover sheet’ that has been placed at the front of the ‘Assignment 1 Tasks’ document.

Feedback: Students who submit their assignment by the due date will receive feedback within 10 working days. Students will receive a copy of the marking key which identifies the correct answer for each task.

A few Tips

• The library/database ‘search’ tasks focus only on textbooks and academic journals that can be accessed electronically through the SCU library. There is no need to search for and obtain hardcopies of any documents and no tasks require you to locate non-referred publications such as magazines or newspapers.

• For students who have received previous tuition on the Harvard referencing technique, please keep in mind that there are many variations even within this one style type. It is therefore likely that when studying the Library’s Harvard Referencing Guide you may see small differences to what you know. As the marking criteria for this assignment is based on the Library’s Guide, it is important that you follow the format that is set out in this resource.

• If you have trouble with any of the tasks, ask a librarian for support. They won’t give you the answer but they will provide detailed instruction on using the search features and/or understanding the elements of good referencing. The library homepage also offers video tutorials on how to search for publications using the library databases and how to reference correctly.

• The skills you learn (or demonstrate) in this assignment will be required for Assignment 2 in MNG10247 and assignments in other units. I therefore strongly encourage every student to make an honest attempt at each question.
