The Handmaid’s Tale
Background:
The definition of a novel is a prose narrative that deals imaginatively with human experience. This occurs through a connected sequence of events involving a group of persons in a specific setting. Although the short story also deals narratively with human experience, the novel contains more complexity because of its length. The novel usually utilizes literary elements such as setting, character, subplots, conflict, narrative voice and often includes figurative elements such as metaphor, symbol, and foreshadowing. The novel, in addition to being simple entertainment, can be used to interpret life, express the spirit of an era, or be an agent for change.
Assignment:
You will write a 6-7 page essay that analyzes a theme in The Handmaid’s Tale. You can analyze the theme from the perspective of a particular critical theory such as Feminism or Psychoanalysis. Or you can compare The Handmaid’s Tale to another work from this semester that features a similar theme and analyze their similarities and differences. Or you can analyze the novel through a Formalist close reading that examines key elements in the novel and explains how they develop or complicate the theme. Include citations from at least one literary critic.
Try to “complicate” your analysis. Avoid obvious or general explanations or oversimplification of the characters, conflict, or theme. Instead, look at the complexities, expose the contradictions, ironies, or paradoxes in the society’s dominant hierarchies and in the characters’ behaviors. Explore the power of ideology to dominate others but the difficulties of those in power to adhere to it. Explore the need to subvert power in order to survive. Be careful NOT to summarize the story or moralize to the reader. The body paragraphs should NOT simply retell the story or preach about what the characters should or should not have done. Rather, assert your claim about the novel’s theme related to power, sexuality, gender roles, or the potential of language to transform. Develop your argument with character analysis, diction, and other evidence from the novel as well as the comments of literary critics.
Requirements:
1. An introduction that provides necessary background information for the novel including its title and author.
2. A thesis that asserts your claim of the theme
3. Body paragraphs which smoothly and logically transition from one point to the next. Paragraphs that include a topic sentence identifying a point that is related to theme
4. A conclusion paragraph that refers back to thesis idea and provides a thoughtful reflection on theme of the novel.
5. MLA Style essay heading, font size (Times New Roman, font 12), double spacing
6. Correct MLA citation format and works cited page. One source of criticism is required.
7. Standard English sentence structure, academic tone, and minimal grammatical errors.
8. Author’s notes that evaluate the components of your essay and provide revision ideas.
