Instructions:
The report is due at the beginning of lecture on Wednesday, may 27. Use an appropriate title page with the last 4 digits of your student ID. Make sure each part is clearly labeled. Each part of this report is worth 10 points- 50 points in all. Use a standard front size 12. Any diagram you use should be inserted in the document near to the text that relates to it.

Part1: Predication:
Describe the experiments and theoretical consideration that led Wolfgang Pauli in 1930 to hypothesize the existence of the neutrino and predict its properties. Explain how it got its current name and the role of Enrico Fermi in reinforcing Pauli’s ideas.

Part2: Detection:
Explain why it is so difficult to detect neutrinos and describe how their existence and properties were demonstrated. Describe some of the most important neutrino detectors that exist today and some of the accomplishments of their use.

Part3: Nature of Neutrinos
What kind of particle is neutrino? How is it related to the other elementary particles that make up the universe? Where in the universe are these particles produced?

Part4: The solar neutrino problem and the neutrino’s mass and speed:
Explain what is meant by the solar neutrino problem, Explain how this problem could be resolved if the neutrino has a non-zero mass. Describe how physicists can determine the masses and speed of such elusive particle. Give the best modern estimates of the vakues of these quantities.

Part 5 : supernovas and neutrinos
Describe the circumstances that exist during a supernovas event that can lead to the release within a very short time of an inconceivably enormous number of neutrinos.
What evidence do we have that such events actually occur including Supernova1987 A?
What role do these neutrinos supposedly play in the evolution of the universe?
