M1_Assignment
Base answers on the text and module resources. You may use a word processor that saves documents in MS Word formats (.doc or .docx) to present your answer. MS Word and several others have very good math editing tools that show math looking like math. If you prefer, you may show your work on a spreadsheet that will save in .xls format.
1. Identify 3 ways in which Egyptian and Mesopotamian math were the same and 3 ways in which they were different.
2. The Mesopotamians and the Egyptians used values that estimated π.
What were their estimates?
Estimate π yourself by finding a circular object. Measure the diameter and the circumference. Calculate π to three decimal places, using the formula π = C/d or π equals the circumference of the circle divided by the diameter.
If you don’t know, look up the real value of π to three decimal places. What is it? How close did you get? Were you closer than the Egyptians? The Mesopotamians?
Now, do a little Googling: what is the greatest number of decimal places to which π has been calculated to date? Please note your source.
3. Problem solving is shown in both Egyptian and Mesopotamian sources. Discuss at least 3 examples of applications of mathematics identified in the textbook. Explain what mathematics was used and why it was important in each case.
